PVOH helps keep the active ingredients of our products off your skin, prevents spills, and promotes a safer and more convenient user experience. It ensures safe and convenient delivery of the concentrated formulation and effectively releases product during the wash cycle.
Is PVOH safe for use in the capsule wrap?
Yes, PVOH is considered safe for use. PVOH has a long history of use in various industries, including food and pharmaceuticals, and is widely recognised as a safe and reliable material. The Laundry Capsules themselves are not safe for children to handle, keep out of reach of children to prevent any accidental ingestion or contact.

Does PVOH pose any environmental risks?
No, PVOH does not pose environmental risks. It is a biodegradable material that naturally decomposes in water. The American Cleaning Institute has provided an official statement regarding PVOH, addressing the current campaign circulating. We encourage you to read their statement, which includes important citations related to this topic.
Do you offer alternative products to PVOH pods?
Yes, our 3x Concentrated Laundry Liquid provides another powerful laundry option for customers who prefer that format.
What are enzymes and how do they work in laundry cleaning?
Enzymes are proteins that act as natural catalysts by targeting specific substances, such as stains, and breaking them down. In laundry detergents, enzymes help accelerate the cleaning process by enabling better stain removal and improving overall cleaning performance. They work by cleaving stains into smaller pieces, making it easier for surfactants to lift off and wash away the stains during the washing process.
Are there environmental benefits to using laundry enzymes?
Yes, better performance with minimal environmental impact. Without using enzymes, it would take far higher levels of surfactants/additives to achieve the same level of cleaning performance.
Are the enzymes used by ecostore the same as those used by other laundry product manufacturers?
Our enzymes are produced using genetically modified microorganisms, which are safely contained in a lab. While not all brands disclose this information, it is likely that mainstream brands also use enzymes produced through genetic modification.
Where do enzymes come from?
Enzymes are naturally occurring and vital to life. They are present in our cells and facilitate chemical reactions that build or break down substances. Digestive enzymes, such as amylase, protease, and lipase, are produced in our bodies to help digest carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. These naturally occurring enzymes are highly effective at removing food stains.
How are enzymes made?
Genetically engineered bacteria produce and excrete enzymes in a fermentation tank, which is centrifuged to separate the enzymes. The enzymes are concentrated and further processed, while bacteria are neutralised and used as fertiliser.
Are enzymes genetically modified?
The enzymes themselves aren’t genetically modified; they’re a by-product of genetically engineered bacteria created safely in a lab, not in our environment.
Will enzymes irritate my skin?
Given the very small amounts and because of the encapsulation technology to protect the enzyme, we’re confident it’s extremely unlikely enzymes will irritate skin - less likely than the risk associated with fragrance, for example.
Are enzymes biodegradable?
Enzymes are readily biodegradable.
Are enzymes suitable for greywater?
Using enzymes can actually improve greywater quality, because they enable laundry detergents to be made with lower levels of surfactants and additives.
What is Protease?
Proteases are a group of enzymes that target protein-based stains such as sebum, blood, grass, milk and egg.
What is Amylase?
Amylases are a group of enzymes that target starch-based stains such as flours, porridge, corn starch, potato starch, sauces, and soups.
What is Lipase?
Lipase is a type of enzyme that breaks down fats and oils – from melted cheese to oil-based dressings, lipstick and body lotion – to help laundry detergents remove them more effectively.
What is Mannanase?
Mannanase targets the gums in processed food, like tomato sauce, baby food, ice cream, chocolate and fruity drinks.
What is Pectinase?
Pectinase breaks down pectin, reducing viscosity and enhancing the solubility of pectin stains, resulting in better stain removal.
What is Cellulases?
Cellulases are enzymes that play a crucial role in fabric care and cleaning. They help maintain garment colors, improve decontamination, and give fabrics a clean and bright appearance.
