Betaine

Betaines are a group of chemical compounds with charged properties, the first of which was discovered in sugar beets. Today this beet-derived amino acid is known as Trimethylglycine or Glycine betaine, to distinguish it from other betaines, which occur naturally in many other plants. It is a natural byproduct of processing sucrose from sugar beets.
