Back to work Keep that holiday wellness

Settling into work after the holidays isn't always easy, especially after Christmas when we've often experienced lots of fun with family and friends. In fact, three in four of us admit to feeling stressed about returning to the office after a taking a break.

In this recent article, Mental Health Foundation Chief Executive, Judi Clements said when people return to work after Christmas they can feel lethargic and unmotivated. The foundation recommends that workers pace themselves and keep doing the activities outside of work that they enjoy.

It's easy to let our health and hobbies fall by the wayside when we're feeling overwhelmed with tasks to catch up on, but prioritising wellbeing is key for working productively and managing stress. This is especially important after a busy silly season, which can leave us feeling in need of more sleep and self-care.

We've put together our top five tips for keeping well at work to help you transition into office mode smoothly. If you've got any suggestions to add leave us a comment below!

1. Make mornings work

Your morning routine can set the tone for the day, so if you want to stay motivated, it's important to begin on a positive note. Fitting in some exercise and eating a nourishing breakfast are great ways to start. Even if you only have time for a 15 minute workout, getting moving can help to boost your mood and productivity levels. The brain needs glucose to stay alert and focused, and even if you don't like eating first thing, you can still get your morning nutrition by whipping up a healthy smoothie to enjoy on the way to work.

2. Make a list

Write a to-do list with the most important tasks at the top to help focus your time and energy on high value activities and keep track of everything you need to get done. This way everything is documented in once place, which will help with feeling more organised and planning each day.

3. Make it personal

Research has shown that an organised desk and personalising are linked to improved productivity. An indoor plant and a selection of pictures can be all it takes, or a pin-board filled with photos and messages is a nice touch too.

4. Get up and move

Studies suggest that prolonged sitting can have a negative effect on our health, so you're office bound, remember to regularly get up and move around. The Mayo Clinic recommends this series of simple stretches to keep your blood pumping and prevent muscles from feeling sore and tight.

5. Reward yourself

Whether it's by going out for dinner, enjoying a relaxing bath or treating yourself to something you've had your eye on, find time to reward yourself after having a successful day or completing a difficult project.
