Basil is a fragrant herb from the mint family, and is also known as great basil or Saint-Joseph's-wort. Basil's primary use is in cooking, however its different aroma profiles make the essential oils useful in fragrances. The strong clove scent of sweet basil is derived from eugenol, the same chemical as actual cloves.
