Pure gold: the benefits of Mānuka honey in skincare

This liquid gold is finding fame worldwide for its natural antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It’s been proven to help heal, cleanse and soothe skin and even beat antibiotic resistant bacteria.

Applied directly, Mānuka Honey is healing, soothing and nourishing for dry, chapped skin and can also help with conditions like eczema and dermatitis. Rich in nutrients, vitamins and amino acids and a soothing natural humectant, it’s no wonder Mānuka honey is touted as being so good for both our insides and our outsides. But it’s Mānuka honey’s antimicrobial properties that really set it apart.

Most honeys have a mild antibiotic quality, thanks to naturally occurring hydrogen peroxide activity (HPA). But Mānuka Honey also contains a sugar molecule called methylglyoxal (MGO), which is found in most honeys. But in Mānuka Honey, MGO can be up to 100x higher.

New Zealand scientist Dr Peter Molan MBE discovered that when he destroyed honey’s HPA, only Mānuka honey was still strongly antibacterial, even after exposing it to heat, liquid and light. This is down to its high concentration of methyglyoxal. He and his team also proved Mānuka Honey could fight bacteria that had become resistant to normal antibiotics.

Made by honeybees from the nectar of an unassuming, scrubby native tree, Mānuka Honey comes from deep within wild, remote New Zealand back country. To maximise the amount of Mānuka nectar in the Honey means placing beehives in locations surrounded by Mānuka trees.

Mānuka Honey also smells delicious – like all honeys do, but with an added richness and complexity – making it perfect for natural body care products. Our new Mint & Mānuka Honey Hand Wash and Jasmine & Mānuka Honey Body Wash contain 100+ MGO Mānuka Honey and hydrating harakeke, to leave skin clean, soft and cared for.
