Ingredient - Bulnesia Sarmientoi (Guaiac) Wood Oil

Guaiac wood oil is a yellow essential oil with a rich, warm, and woody aroma with subtle hints of smoke and vanilla. It's derived from the wood of the guaiac tree (Bulnesia sarmientoi). We use this ingredient to add fragrance to some of our products.

Bulnesia sarmientoi is a species of slow-growing deciduous tree found in tropical regions of South America, particularly Argentina and Paraguay. Trees grow up to 18 meters tall, and are sometimes referred to by the common Spanish name 'Palo Santo', which translates to 'Holy Stick'. The fragrant heartwood can be steam-distilled to produce guaiac essential oil, which is widely used in perfumery and fragrance industries as a base note or fixative, adding depth and longevity to various scents.

In addition to its aromatic qualities, guaiac wood oil has been traditionally used for its therapeutic benefits. The oil has been utilized in natural medicine for centuries to alleviate various ailments such as joint and muscle pain, respiratory issues, and skin conditions. The oil's antimicrobial properties may help combat bacteria that contribute to skin issues, while its anti-inflammatory effects may aid in soothing irritation and redness. It's important to note that guaiac wood oil is generally well-tolerated; however, some individuals may have sensitivities or allergic reactions to the oil.

Bulnesia sarmientoi populations are known to be in decline due to threats from logging, farming and other habitat loss. It has been classed as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. The species is found in a number of protected areas in Argentina, Paraguay and Bolivia, and some restrictions are in place for trade and timber use. Conservation efforts to protect and sustain the population of the guaiac tree and its associated biodiversity should continue to be supported.
