Benzalkonium chloride is a synthetic antibacterial ingredient used in many cleaners and personal care products, but it’s also a known irritant linked to skin, eye, and respiratory reactions. Research is ongoing into its potential role in antibacterial resistance, and because of these concerns, we choose to leave it out of our products.

Cocamide MEA is a foam-boosting ingredient used in soaps and shampoos, but it carries some of the same health and contamination concerns as Cocamide DEA, so we choose to leave it out of our products. Made by reacting coconut fatty acids with ethanolamine, it’s generally less irritating to skin than Cocamide DEA, but its vapour is highly toxic and unsuitable for products that may be aerosolised.

Optical brighteners are chemicals used to make fabrics appear whiter and brighter, both during manufacturing and in laundry detergents. Because they adhere to clothing, they stay in contact with our skin, and while there’s limited evidence of health risks, they’re made from non-renewable petrochemicals and break down slowly in the environment.
